Guys, I am in the same boat with my passport expiring in 2007. I will have to get a new passport since the current one was already valid for 10 years (issued in 97).
Does any one here have any experience / ideas on how long it takes to get the new passport from the consulate here ?

It took me just three days to get the passport from New York. I sent it by "Next Day" USPS on Monday (there was an option to get it delivered by "Next Day" USPS) and I got it back on Thursday by 10:00 a.m.

My attornies (big firm...working for Fortune 500 company) says that dates could retrogress anytime i.e. on 15 July 07, dates could move back several months and the chances of that happening are very high. My advise is to have your spouse cut the vacation short and return asap...! You need to file ASAP.
are you sure that the dates can retrogress by july 15???

Please read before giving your opinions: as per memo not my words:
USCIS is required to grant the extension of stay pursuant to �106(a) of AC21, in one-year increments, until such time as a final decision has been made to:
A. Deny the application for labor certification, or, if the labor certification is approved, to deny the EB immigrant petition that was filed pursuant to the approved labor certification;
B. Deny the EB immigrant petition, or
C. Grant or deny the alien’s application for an immigrant visa or for adjustment of status.
The operative words here being "UNTIL SUCH TIME" - which if I am not wrong means when the decision is reached.....so you DO NOT HAVE A VALID H1B IF 485 IS DENIED.

But, if you are on H1 (based on I-485) and your I-485 is denied, and later you lose your job with the H1 employer, then you might not be able to transfer your H1 to a new employer even though you have time left on the extended H1. Obviously, this is my opinion.

You may not be in position to get exp letters from previous employers due to various reasons e.g., company is closed or they give exp letters in a set format which does not mention what you did there.
In such scenarios Experience letter from X-Colleague or X-Manager from the same company with/under whom you worked will be OK. X-colleague/Manager does not have to be in that company now.
I gave an experience letter to one of my friends who worked in my group in India.
He got his EAD.
Ask the lawyer what kind of language should be there on the exp letter... My friends lawyer gave the language to him.
The person issuing the exp letter has to mention how he knows the applicant and under what capacity you were working,
contact information etc etc.

I agree. I like the second one better. The color seems to "pop" more.
